This article, based on ethnographic re search conducted between 2017 and 2019 in a favela in Belo Horizonte, discusses the effects of criminal activities on the daily lives of the urban poor in the city. Unlike what happens in Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo, where large criminal orga nizations came into being, in BH what predomi nates is the formation of small rival groups that coexist in the same territories and that engage in cycles of extreme violence natively referred to as “gang wars”. The text is centered on three main characters: Caio, 40, Catholic and gym teach er; Thiago, 23 years old, ex-evangelical, musi cian, newsboy and photographer; and Camila, 25, evangelical, divorced and saleswoman in a clothing store. None of them can be identified as immersed in the “world of crime”, but even so, their experiences, subjectivities, and relation ships are constantly affected by criminal activity in the favela. It is argued, then, that crime, even if fragmented, presents itself as normativity or order in BH. The text seeks to analyze the mecha nisms by which this normative capacity of crime is forged in a context of multiple rival gangs.
