The Hellmuth case is one of the most controversial episodes of World War II. This paper revisits this international incident that is blamed for forcing the abandonment of neutrality in the conflict of Argentina due to the discovery of a spy network with totalitarian intentions and the intends of access to a weapons supply system. The incident reveals both external aspirations of the country to exercise a greater degree of independence as to advance policies that are put in the service of defence and strategic interests of the Argentine military had long shared and that Juan Perón was willing to run, in the times of the 1943 regime and then during their presidencies. This implies also a reflection on the construction of the na- rrative and historical truth.
