The identity discourse used in relation to the South American Defense Council can be analyzed with International Relations constructivist theory. Contrary to mainstream theories, constructivism posed the question about how and to what extent a group of states can share an identity. The paper surveys the security and defense related conceptualizations about collective identities made by a range of authors, emphasizing the limitations and challenges implied by the concept for the practice of interstate relations. After some conceptual clarification the article assesses the Council's achievements during its first three years of existence and some appreciations about its future are laid down as a conclusion.
