The development of polymeric macrofibers has led to great advances in the use of fiber-reinforced concrete. In several applications these fibers can compete with advantages over steel fibers. however, diverse polymeric macrofibers are offered on the market, and there are marked differences between them not only in type of material, geometry and texture, but more importantly, in their effects on fresh and hardened concrete. This paper addresses this issue by showing the current criteria to be used to select the appropriate fiber and dosage for a given application, which is based on the evaluation of the performance of concrete with fibers. Pull-out tests of individual fibers embedded in a mortar matrix are then shown indicative of the aforementioned differences. Finally, results from impact tests are presented that show another of the benefits that polymeric macrofibers can provide.
