This paper proposes an analysis on the conceptual displacements that emerge in contemporary geopolitical thinking, in reference to the power in the context of the network society. Wheter through the expansion of the capitalist system a globalized geoeconomic structure, that drew a cultural matrix based on centers and peripheries, was formed; the XXI century seems to present a mutation of this stage, crossed by the technique and the advance of digitalization. This can be conceptualized from the mutation of the worldsystem perspective towards the formation of the geopolitical concept of the global city. The article focuses on this epistemic displacement starting with a genealogical review from the old idea of polis to the field of the contemporary geopolitics studies. Then the perspective of the worldsystem of Immanuel Wallerstein is outlined and finally the passage of this approach towards the scheme of the global city, by Saskia Sassen, is analyzed; from which the axes of a specific geopolitics of the network society of the 21st century can be glimpsed.
