The space that Walter Benjamin creates between mimesis and history opens up a question that links him both to the traditional debates of aesthetic modernity on the “imitation of antiquity”, and to the concerns that anthropology, psychoanalysis and the avant-garde were displaying in his time about the archaic heritage in modern man. This work explores the fundamental aspects of this “archaeomodernity”, which allows for an unusual reading of Benjaminian conceptions of perception and temporality, and at the same time clears the territory of a programmatic confluence between “anthropological materialism” and “historical materialism”.
