The spider families Mecicobothriidae, Hexathelidae and Dipluridae include mostly sheet-weaver mygalomorph spiders of variable size, superficially similar because of the presence of long posterior lateral spinnerets. Mecicobothriidae (four genera and nine species described, seven of which are exclusive from western North America) are represented by a single species in Argentina, in hilly areas of Buenos Aires. They are distinguished by the presence of a sclerotized tergite in front of the abdomen and by the longitudinal fovea. Hexathelidae (family with a wide distribution, with 11 genera and 86 species) also have a single species in the country (Tierra del Fuego and Santa Cruz) and are recognized for having six spinnerets and numerous cuspules in the mouthparts, although its monophyly is doubtful. Dipluridae, closely related to the former, but also probably not monophyletic, are distinguished from Hexathelidae by having only four spinnerets; they are known from many parts of the world and have 25 genera (four in Argentina) and 178 species (five from Argentina, one of which is still undescribed), being more typical of the forested regions of the north of the country.
