Petrology, geochemistry and structure as well as possible emplacement mechanisms in connection with the Andean deformation processes are studied for the first time for the Pitrén dykes located at the northern end of the Agrio fold and thrust belt. These igneous bodies crop out discontinuously along a NE-SW (049°) orientation, being oblique to the main NNW-SSE structures of the Agrio belt. These andesitic and andesitic-basaltic dykes have volcanic arc signatures as indicated by negative anomalies of Nb, Ta and Ti. High Zr and moderate Ti allow to distinguish the Pitrén dykes from the surrounding igneous rocks. Structural analysis of meso-scale fractures, lineaments and folds indicates WSW-ENE regional orientation of the maximum compressive stress. Both lineaments and dextral shear fractures have the same NE-SW orientation that the dykes. Therefore the emplacement of the dykes would occur along these oblique structures formed during the Andean compression.
