This article analyses the Argentine national government's labour market policies in favour of the unemployed in the 2003-2009 period based on legislation, budgetary data, and official statistics. In the first section, the impact of the political ideas of neoliberalism on the paradigms of the fight against unemployment in Argentina in the 90s is theoretically discussed. In the second section, the logic of individualism and the residual role of the State are found in the rationale behind the employment programs in force during the 2003-2019 years, a period marked by labour informality and growing economic volatility. Finally, the article develops a survey of the characteristics, coverage, benefits, and budget of employment programs, uncovering the institutional fragmentation, low budgetary priority, and insufficient scope of labour market policies in Argentina.
