The Guanacache, Desaguadero and Bebedero Lagoons Environmental System (SALGDB), a hydrologically significant area in western Argentina, has undergone a notable reduction and environmental transformation in recent decades. This study reconstructs the spatiotemporal dynamics of the SALGDB during the period 1987-2022 through the analysis of satellite imagery and remote sensing techniques, evaluating its response to variations in the flow rates of the Mendoza and San Juan rivers. Furthermore, physiographic changes in terms of landscape unit substitution are identified and quantified. The results reveal a cumulative surface reduction of 156 ± 13 km², with an interannual variability explained by 64% due to fluctuations in San Juan River flow rates. This retraction has resulted in the expansion of environments associated with desertification processes, such as shallow depressions, dune fields, and gullies with vegetation.
