The Balance of Payments constraints have been an historical barrier to GDP growth in dependent countries like Argentina. Despite having good results in foreign trade in the early years of the post-convertibility, new difficulties in the external front reappeared strongly in recent years, whose main manifestations were the decrease in international reserves and the currency devaluation in January 2014. In this context, the aim of this paper is to analyze the main determinants of the BOP constraint after the convertibility crisis in 2002. The hypothesis is that the current manifestation of "bottlenecks" in the external sector is mainly due to the combination of a number of structural factors (many inherited from the 1990’s and others which are "new"). To accomplish the proposed goal we analyze the evolution of the main components of the balance of payments in post-convertibility, establishing different stages within this period.
