We analize the meaning that imprisoned women elaborate regarding the various difficulties they have to endure confined motherhood. We also describe the interpretative schemes that institutional agents, who in one way or another are involved and make decisions on these women lives, use to suppose and evaluate what is best for their children. We are interested in identifying the most usual notions and stereotypes about the ways these women exert motherhood, which circulate and are recreated in fields like penitentiary, judicial, public policy, because such assumptions strongly influence the actions designed, imagined or displayed on them.
