La casa endiablada: the dichotomy civilización/ barbarie in the detective story
Holmberg is-along with Raúl Waleis-the most important Argentine author of detective fiction of the nineteenth century. Critics have analyzed quite enough La bolsa de huesos (1896), while they have paid few attention to La casa endiablada (1896). Only three texts (Pagés Larraya, Ponce, Agresti) analyze in detail this detective story, and none of these authors discuss the presence in this detective story of the dichotomy between civilización and barbarie. This paper studies the reformulation of this national dichotomy in La casa endiablada, and its relation with the representation of law and crime. I try to show how this opposition is here re-territorialized within the space of the city and in connection with the limits of positive law.
