High concentrations of trace elements such as arsenic and manganese are a limitation in groundwater used for human consumption. This problem is further aggravated in areas without water treatment plants, like in rural sectors where the local villagers are supplied directly from household wells. The aim of this work is to analyze the abundance and distribution of these trace elements in the groundwater used for supply by the rural inhabitants of the coast of Bahía Samborombón. To this end, a monitoring network was established that included mills, household and monitoring wells where the pH and electrical conductivity of the water were measured in situ and samples were taken for further chemical analysis in the laboratory. The results show that arsenic has concentrations that vary between 0,001 and 0,205 mg/L, while manganese varies between 0,001 and 0,868 mg/L, with 40% of the samples exceeding the potability limits of 0,05 mg/L and 0,1 mg/L, respectively. The greatest aggravating factor is that the highest concentrations of arsenic and manganese were detected in the freshwater lenses harbored in the littoral ridges, which are the main source of supply for the region. The results obtained in this work, although they are preliminary, allow to contribute to the understanding of the hydrogeochemical processes that regulate the distribution of these trace elements. In addition, the importance of monitoring the sources of fresh water to achieve a better and sustainable use is raised.
