This paper analyzes La profession de foi du vicaire sovayard in order to understand Rousseau’s conception of skepticism. Firstly, it is shown that the "skeptical crisis" of the Vicar is an important ingredient of the text, and that the "involuntary skepticism" that this character defends is a palliative but not solution of that crisis. Secondly, we examine the similarities between La profession de foi and Pierre Charron’s De la sagesse; in our view, Charron’s treaty is an important precedent of the link between skeptical scrutiny and recovery of the "natural voice" that sets the Vicar.
