A new strategy for the detection of asymmetric demagnetization of permanent magnet synchronous generators used in wind turbines is proposed in this paper. The strategy is based on measuring the voltage at the midpoint of the phase windings. Unlike the phase voltage, in the case of fault the midpoint voltage spectrum has sidebands around the fundamental component, which allow to detect and quantify the demagnetization. The acquired voltage is resampled according to the rotor angle, estimated from the line voltages of the generator, allowing the implementation of the proposed strategy in turbines operating at variable speed.
