This article analyses a central aspect of the philosophical-social significance of Christian liberation theology: the theoretical link proposed in some of its discourses between the great findings of philosophical Modernity and the ideology of the modernization projects implemented in Latin America from the horizon of meaning of a liberationist eschatology-utopia. The question of “liberationist eschatology” reveals the mode of relationship established by some approaches within this theological thought between the transcendent sphere of “eschatology-salvation” and the immanent sphere of “historicalpolitical praxis”. Four main elements are analyzed: First, a brief presentation of Christian liberation theology; second, the relationship between its theoretical formulation and the hermeneutic horizon of philosophical Modernity; third, its critique of capitalist-developmentalist modernization projects; and fourth, its interpretation of the concepts of “eschatology” and “utopia” in key texts by two of its most important authors: Gustavo Gutiérrez (2009) and Ignacio Ellacuría (2008a, 2008b), from the connection between the spheres of “salvation” and “historical praxis”.
