La tierra incomparable (1994) by Antonio Dal Masetto and El laúd y la guerra (1995) by Martina Gusberti are novels written by Italian-Argentine authors in which the experience of returning to their native land is recounted. In both fictions, the writing of the νόστος (“return”) leads the writers to carry out a process of reconstruction of the biography of their parents. Because each author faced this unavoidable transit through parental experience in a particular way, our objective will be to identify the different modes of presentation of these memories in the novels, trying to explain, at the same time, the unavoidable character of that "diamnesia" (es that is, that transit through the memory of the other). The hypothesis that guides us states the existence of a complex relationship between the writer, the "lost" homeland and the ability to remember that Italian past, which leads the authors to go through parental experiences – mainly, those linked to the world wars survival and the immigration process itself– and to outline a kind of family archive that allowed them to reconfigure their own identity.
