The present study aims to analyze the role of play as a mediator of learning in 11 to 12-year-old children living in vulnerable contexts. Using a mixed exploratory-descriptive research design, the study sought to explore the meanings attributed to play by boys and girls, investigate whether these children recognize themselves as learning while playing, and describe the play moments considering the types of play, frequency, physical space, and material resources used to facilitate play. Unstructured group interviews were conducted with 24 children attending sixth and seventh grade in a public school in Rosario, Santa Fe, Argentina, located in a vulnerable context. The results demonstrate that the majority of the participants recognize themselves as learning while playing, viewing play primarily as a moment for socializing and being with others, with social and rule-based play prevailing in their everyday lives. Additionally, it is evident that playing mostly takes place in private spaces, primarily one's own home, with intra-familial play being notably prominent. This contributes to the understanding of the role of play in early childhood from the perspective of children themselves. The study highlights the importance of comprehending play as a means of learning in these contexts and emphasizes the need to promote it in educational and community settings to foster the holistic development of children.
