In the last year, Argentina has debated free access to public universities like never before. Driven by a new political sign that has governed the country since December 2023, the university faces various budget cuts and statements seeking to delegitimize its social role. At the same time, an ideal historically rooted in Argentine culture is called into question: university education as a right and a factor for social mobility and equal opportunity. Starting from the sociology of education of Émile Durkheim, the article analyzes the relevance of his thought to observe periods of current crisis and the role of education in maintaining a society. The objective of this article is to explore the current and historical context of the Argentine university. Likewise, we wonder about its function in the social transmission of values and norms and its role in solidarity and social bond constructions.
