Pierre Bourdieu’s conception about family is part of his theoretical perspective on the relationship between objective and subjective structures. Family is a nominal fiction with real grounds and effects, which becomes a real group, an integrated body that transcends its members, through recurrent acts of institutionalization and symbolic efficacy of the state. As a social body, family is the subject of different strategies of social reproduction in the struggles that engage in social space. Every family is also a battlefield in itself, crossed by power relationships that counteract trends towards integration. This article presents the theoretical perspective of Bourdieu on family by organizing it in these three areas: as fiction that becomes real groups, as integrated body performing reproduction strategies and as field where family struggles take place.
