This study aims to analyze the participation of technical devices in communication based on the perspective of social systems theory, especially on Elena Esposito’s concept of artificial communication. By questioning the possibility of artificial communication, this study critically examines systemic premises proposes a three-condition scheme: technical, medial, and operational. It then develops a hierarchical scheme of categories: digital communication, artificial communication, and algorithmic communication, the latter of which aims to capture the specificity of the participation of algorithms in the social world.
