During the last decades outsourcing has grown rapidly in Latin America, and it has become one of the main strategies of productive restructuring processes. The main aims of this article are, on the one hand, to study why medium-sized companies out- source cleaning and security activities, and on the other, to analyse the differences in employment quality between the workers that carry out these tasks and the direct employees of the main companies. The study offers a qualitative approach based on interviews with company representatives and analysis of collective agreements. The universe of study includes medium-sized private companies located in the western region of the Buenos Aires suburbs.
