The paper presents a review of the Self-Determination Theory (SDT), posed as a macro-theory on the human motivation. This notion is defi ned as the energy, direction, persistence and purpose of behaviors, including goals and actions. In order to introduce the current approach to motivation, current theories (attributional theories, goal models social-cognitive theory and self-regulation theory) are summarized. STD arises as one of the current and widely used models. Their main notes are highlighted, as well as the sub-theories which compose it. The theory on the basic psychological needs describes how behaviors are energized. The rest of them –causality orientations, cognitive evaluations, organismic integration, and goal contents theories- describe the processes which drive behaviors. The explicative scope of the model allows its application to diverse fi elds of human activities. Finally, its links with current approaches are discussed and contradictions found in recent research.
