This paper explores the tensions raised by the standardization of medical language in contexts marked by gender-related disputes. It examines a 2022 intervention in the standardized terminology SNOMED CT, aimed at adapting it to Argentina’s legal and human rights framework on gender identity, and proposes a reverse approach to that commonly found in the literature: instead of beginning with social conditions such as sexism or transphobia, it takes a linguistic intervention as a point of departure to unfold a problematic and underexplored geopolitical scenario. Methodologically, the study combines a case analysis of the aforementioned revision with a critical examination of the trans depathologization movement, particularly the International Stop Trans Pathologization Campaign. Through this contrast, it underscores the need to understand SNOMED CT standardization as a technology of global governmentality. In doing so, the paper contributes to the field of glottopolitics by shedding light on the technical and political dynamics shaping medical language and offers analytical tools for social movements engaged in the struggle for the depathologization of trans identities.
