Students have previous ideas that are primordial elements in learning since new knowledge is constructed on preexistent schemes. In this paper we present our experience in an interactive workshop done in the area of popularization of knowledge and articulation with high school, that belongs to the Faculty of Science at the University of Buenos Aires. Students answer if different illness of sanitary importance are of viral origin during one of the activities. Results obtained show that the percentage of right answers are between 47 and 57 % according to the group taken into consideration, and, flu is the most known viral illness. Rabies, warts and labial herpes were diseases not associated to any virus. The diseases for which campaigns of prevention exist, such as AIDS and dengue, also were neither related in 100% to their viral origin. In this context, the inquiry of previous knowledge helped us to reformulate proposals at the workshop in order to improve learning.
