This study evaluated the effect of object similarity and domain similarity on spontaneous retrieval of analogous situations during the generation of explanatory hypotheses. It was found that both object similarity and domain similarity favored spontaneous retrieval of a previously studied analogous situation. Analogical retrieval proved to be a relevant condition for transfer, since virtually all participants who applied the causal structure of the base situation to the target phenomenon reported having recalled that situation. However, analogical retrieval did not guarantee the application of its causal structure to the target phenomenon, especially when the objects in both situations were not similar. The implications of these results for the educational field and for computational models of analogical retrieval are discussed.
