In this work we have investigated the pictorial technique of the wall paintings of the church of the Holy Cross of Our Lady of the Rosary in the town of Orurillo in Peru. The paintings that can be dated between the 17th and 18th centuries depict floral motifs, roleos and large stripes that imitate textiles, which cover the entire nave and sacristy. From the chemical analysis of micro-samples extracted from these paints, we identified a preparation layer of calcium sulfate (gypsum and anhydrite) and a seco painting technique with a tempera grassa as the pigment binder. The identification of animal glue in the samples suggests its use as a primer on the preparation layer. This technique, coincident with that of wall paintings of Andean colonial churches in Chile and Bolivia points to a common pictorial practice for the manufacture of wall paintings in these temples.
