For it consequences, alcohol consumption became a public health problem worldwide with priority focus on pregnant women and women within childbearing age. Prenatal alcohol exposure can cause a number of problems, included under the term Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders, and the high prevalence of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Argentina highlights the need for prevention tools that promotes abstinence. Brief Intervention (BI) is a short and easy to implement technique with excellent costeffectiveness. When used in pregnant women shows reduction in the quantity and frequency of alcohol consumed by the mother and better health parameters in the babies. Therefore, its inclusion as part of a national alcohol consumption prevention plan during pregnancy may be critical. The aim of this paper is to describe the basic and fundamental characteristics of BIs, reinforcing its value in the previous researches and the seriousness of the problem of alcohol consumption during pregnancy in Argentina, as a valuable contribution to the design of future preventive intervention programs.
