In this paper we consider a series of phenomena in Mocovi language that involves causative and anticausative constructions. We assume that the causativity is a semantic universal which involves different grammatical process. We discuss the transitivity alternation between lexical causative verbs and their anticausative (inchoative) counterparts and we argue that the Mocovi language shows causative alternation. The inchoative verbs are basics and the causative verbs are derived. We study causative lexical verbs. We provide an overview of the semantic, syntactic and morphological properties of constructions undergoing the causative alternation, thereby identifying lexical causative verbs, morphological causative verbs, and analytic causative verbs. Furthermore we attend to the resultative nominalization and instrumental nominalization. In all cases we refer to the semantics of constructions, the selected bases for the derivation, and the semantic and morphosyntactic contexts that constrain the constructions.
