Algarrobo blanco (Prosopis alba Griseb.) grows naturally as secondary tree species in the semiarid region called Chaco, in northern Argentina. This mesquite tree of the mimosa family produces high valuable wood but it is not managed in a sustainable manner. It would be desirable to know when the mean annual increment (MAI) peaks because it provides the best estimate of the maximum production rate that can be continuously sustained, provided stands are not replaced before or after the age of maximum MAI. Thus, the peak MAI is a key value for determining how much can be harvested under sustained-yield management and how long the rotation should be. The objective of the paper was to fit two non-linear equations, namely the Chapman-Richards and logistic models, to predict the growth of algarrobo blanco trees in the Chaco region. Stem analysis was carried out on 10 trees and ring-width data were smoothed to minimize the effect of annual climate variation on the tree growth. Both models fit well but the equations Logistic was preferred because having fewer parameters it is easier to understand their biological meaning. According to the Chapman-Richards and Logistic models the MAI would peak at 67 and 74 years of age respectively.
