In this article we propose to reflect on the thesis as a source for legal history, especially considering its context of production. Secondly, it will be analyzed their specific use for the study of prison reform, which begins to be studied as a thesis topic in 1869, gaining importance to the early twentieth century and finally falling into disuse in 1915.
