The notion of 'field' elaborated by Pierre Bourdieu remains an extremely helpful analytical tool for considering the evolution and the performance of different systems of symbolic production. The concepts of autonomization and of differentiation as constitutive processes of fields have a great heuristic value to better understand a historical dynamics of symbolic productions. Besides, a notion of relative autonomy permits to grasp their relations with other spheres of society, and in particular with politics. However, the 'field' isn't a universal a priori category and, as such, it cannot be unreflexively applied to other times and other places. To what extent it may be used in studies dealing with 'peripheral' countries? The intention of this paper is to examine some limits of this notion in light of the comparative history of economic sciences in Argentina and in Russia, which played a crucial role in the transformations experienced by these countries for more than 20 years.
