The changes occurred in the productive system approximately since the decade of 1970 –“deindustrialization” in some core countries, crisis of the wage relation and the so-called “welfare state”, liberalization of financial capital, etc.-, have generated a series of discussions about the place of labour in contemporary societies. In this context, some authors pointed out that labour was going through a crisis, and have even spoken about a “crisis of the labour society”. However, very frequently these positions have not questioned the concept of labour, or have considered insufficiently the specific characteristics that it acquires with the development of capitalism. Thus, the aim of this article is to go back to Marx’s analysis in order to approach such specificities and investigate the current changes in a fruitful way that allows, as well, questioning the mentioned idea of a “crisis of the labour society”.
