The aim of this paper is to analyze the concept of an infinite understanding, such as it is presented by Salomon Maimon in the Versuch über die Transzendentalphilosophie and by Kant in the paragraphs §§76-78 of the Critique of the Power of Judgment. We will be guided by the hypothesis that Kant might have been influenced by Salomon Maimon, both in construction of the aforementioned concept and in the way of dealing with the problem that it comes to solve, that is, indeterminacy. The comparison between both philosophers’ outlines will serve to emphasize a common quandary. We will hold that, whilst Kant had already considered a concept of an infinite understanding in the first Critique, it is only in regard to the problem of indeterminacy that he will defend, after reading Maimon’s manuscript, a critical use of the said concept.
