Introduction: Moderate consumption of red wine has been associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes, probably due to increased concentrations of adiponectin produced by its intake, together with an improved lipid profile. However, there is no agreement on the adequate amounts of red wine needed to get the benefit. The aim of this study was to compare adipokines levels (leptin and adiponectin) and lipid profile among different red wine consumption groups. Materials and methods: Seventy men between 46 and 74 years old were studied, from a health visit. The work involved the measurement of fasting lipid profile and adipokines, plus a nutritional interview where energy intake, macronutrients and red wine intake were assessed by food frequency questionnaire, body composition through anthropometry and physical activity through validated questionnaire. Statistical analysis was performed using Kruskal – Wallis’ test plus Dunn’s test. Results: According to wine intake, the sample was divided into abstainers (n=20), moderate consumers (n=33) and heavy consumers (n=17). Moderate consumers showed higher levels of adiponectin than abstainers or heavy consumers, along with higher total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels. Leptin, triglycerides and HDL cholesterol did not differ among groups. Conclusions: Moderate red wine consumption is associated with higher adiponectin levels, total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol.
