In the present work, the calibration of individual corn kernels breakage under the discrete element modeling (DEM) approach with the Tavares Breakage model available in Rocky DEM was developed. In order to gather the required experimental information, 60 controlled compression tests were carried out on individual grains, using a texturometer (TA instruments). Two fragments generated by breakage were observed, and an average breakage energy and power of 0.1013 J and 2.1963 W were recorded, respectively. The specific breakage energy and power resulted in 156.92 J/kg and 3332.66 W/kg, for a corn kernel approximated to a rectangular parallelepiped with an average mass of 0.664 g. These tests were replicated in Rocky DEM, implementing the virtual experiment on a particle of parallelepiped shape generated with the same mass and shape, after fitting the corresponding breakage model parameters. The process was adequately simulated in DEM, obtaining the same qualitative breakage results and quantitative values within the range of the distribution of experimental values. The results of this work constitute the base for the subsequent implementation of the corn milling process in DEM.
