This essay tracesthe reception of André Bazin and Gilles Deleuze in Argentine film criticism, between the decades of 1960 and 1990. Just as every contemporary film journal presupposes the pioneering model of Cahiers du cinéma, it is impossible to overestimate the importance of Bazin for modern criticism. In the ̳50s and the ̳60s, Bazin‘s influence was as important for film magazines as Deleuze will be during the ̳80s and the‘90s in the foundation of scholarly criticism. Both authors are crucial for a reflection on the notion of ―modern cinema‖; but while Bazin defines this visual mode in the early stage of its development (fromneorrealist films), Deleuze‘s books offer a taxonomy of modern cinema when it had already begun to show symptoms of exhaustion. The essay follows the ways these two thinkers were read in Argentina: it recontextualizes them within the geopolitical map of contemporary criticism and suggests —according to Andreas Huyssen‘s definition—a reading against the grain.
