Nees & Mart.; Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler & Ebinger; Tessaria integrifolia Ruiz & Pav.; Inga sp.; Pseudalbizzia inundata (Mart.) E. J. M. Koenen & Duno; Sapium haematospermum Müll. Arg.; Myrsine laetevirens (Mez) Arechav y Eugenia myrcianthes Nied.
The Pre-Delta National Park (PNPD) in Entre Ríos, Argentina, is a protected area that hosts a specific plant species composition. The aim of this work is to describe the anatomy of the charred secondary xylem of woody species from the gallery forest of the PNPD, to identify plants in the anthracological record of archaeological and natural contexts. Branches larger than 2 cm in diameter and 10-15 cm long from nine woody species in the gallery forest of the PNPD were carbonized in a muffle furnace at 400°C for 40 minutes to be observed under a stereoscopic microscope, an inverted trinocular microscope, and a scanning electron microscope. The eco-anatomical characters of the species studied are analyzed. Finally, they were added to the Colección de Material Carbonizado (CIDPALBO-CAR) of the CICYTTP (CONICET-Gobierno de Entre Ríos-Universidad Autónoma de Entre Ríos). The described specimens, according to their three planes of observation (transverse, tangential longitudinal, and radial longitudinal), are Croton urucurana Baill; Nectandra angustifolia (Schrad.) Nees & Mart.; Vachellia caven (Molina) Seigler & Ebinger; Tessaria integrifolia Ruiz & Pav.; Inga sp.; Pseudalbizzia inundata (Mart.) E. J. M. Koenen & Duno; Sapium haematospermum Müll. Arg.; Myrsine laetevirens (Mez) Arechav; and Eugenia myrcianthes Nied. The description of the anatomical characteristics of the wood of the gallery forest species of the PNPD is essential for the identification of anthracological remains in archaeological sites and the reconstruction of past patterns of environmental use. This contribution constitutes the first anatomical study of carbonized material of the Delta and Paraná Islands eco-region, where nine species are described for the first time. In addition, the inclusion of these species in the reference collection of the Palaeobotany Laboratory of the CICYTTP is an important contribution to archaeological and palaeontological research in the region.
