The spread and deepening of social and environmental problems on a global level in recent decades, shows clear signs of articulation with the hegemonic paradigms that have dominated debates on development and technology since the midtwentieth century, and that are being seriously questioned in the Latin American context. These questions point out not only the contradictions that affect development models and technological styles promoted in the region, but also the diversity of knowledge forms and cultures that challenge the hegemony and the institutional problems of Latin American democracies for promoting popular participation on these issues. In this article we will work on the hegemonic conceptions of the development, progress, technology and sustainability, among which are particularly important the concepts of the development and technology that need to be problematized and located historically, culturally, politically and ideologically to analyze tensions and contradictions that affect the links between development and environment in the regional context.
