— This work describes the teaching conceptions that have engineering teachers and analyzes their consistency. Particularly, their representations are taken with respect to (a) what is it taught for? and (b) what is taught?, considering, in both cases, aspects related to the contents (selection, sequencing and organization) and evaluation. The research was carried out from a phenomenographical perspective, assuming that teachers construct their conceptions within a certain context and relate to students based on these conceptions. Interviews were conducted and categories were extracted from them, taking as a guide those extracted by previous research carried out with teachers from other disciplines. The results show evidences that the conceptions of the consulted engineering teachers are inconsistent and are located between traditional positions, which imply a student absent in their consideration, and positions in which the student is present but only as an active-repetitive subject.
