The article examines Chris Marker's quotation of L'Année dernière à Marienbad (Alain Resnais, 1961) in Le Mystère Koumiko (1965), where he evokes Marienbad through the photographic materiality of one of its shots, privileging spatial fixity over temporal flow, and transforming this stillness into a figure of quietude and a reserve of time. In this elective gesture, the filmmaker addresses Marienbad—and, by extension, the viewer—opening a critical zone where the image questions its destiny and survival. It thus proposes that essay film does not merely quote to refer: the image pauses, time condenses, and essays as memory of the medium itself. In Marker's film, detention elicits reflective contemplation: cinema remembers—and in remembering, it contemplates its poetic-temporal depth.
