Basic Concepts of Fluorescence and Fluorescent Probes

Abstract

Fundamental aspects of the theoretical basis of the fluorescence phenomenon are described in this chapter. The critical properties that a candidate molecule should have to perfom as a probe for image guided surgery are also discussed and illustrated with recently reported examples. Additionally, the potential use of nanoparticles as fluorescent probes is discussed under the light of the latests reports.
