This article presents a historical reconstruction of the activity of the Unión Obrera Gráfica Cordobesa (UOGC) right after the end of the last military dictatorship. Since 1984, the workers affiliated to the UOGC began a process of recovery and reorganization of trade union activity based on the election of a new executive committee, the election of delegates, organization of assemblies, among others. Which, took place in parallel with the first labour conflicts in democracy. At the same time, the discussion began on what was called ‘trade union normalization’, the disputes over the necessity for unity in the workers’ movement organized at a national level in the CGT, and the regional trade union divisions in which the UOGC had to position itself. In the heat of these issues, the economic crisis will disrupt the initial expectations of the graphic workers. To show this complex process, we will review trade unión bulletins to establish which were the organizational challenges, the politicaldilemmas, and the hopes on the reborn democracy. Our hypothesis suggests that the adverse economic and political context unexpectedly will strain the initial strategy of the workers and will modify their expectations of what democracy had to offer the battered Argentine working class.
