The article examines the relationship between democracy and nationalism by drawing on the post-foundational notion of abjection. To this end, it revisits Manuel Gálvez’s novel El uno y la multitud [1955], whose literary realism illustrates the failure of traditional nationalism when faced with the conflicts of Argentine history during the nineteen-forties and fifties. Based on this analysis, the paper seeks to outline key coordinates of the current national conjuncture.
