War as a historical and theoretical problem has been studied from different approaches. If this is true regarding the contemporary world, it is also true for the study of ancient societies, including those that inhabited the Nile Valley during Predynastic and Early Dynastic periods. Regarding the latter context, the analysis of the available evidence provides an opportunity to suggest possible approaches. The aim of this paper is to contribute to the study of war in the Nile Valley during the Predynastic and Early Dynastic periods by proposing a differentiation between two levels of analysis: that of practice and that of power.
