Rastros de violencia en las fotografías de la Conquista del Desierto (Argentina, 1879-1883)

Abstract

En este trabajo analizaremos algunas de las fotografías producidas durante la “Conquista del Desierto” (1879-1883) dirigida a Norpatagonia, Argentina; con el objetivo de rastrear las representaciones de violencia en estas campañas militares dirigidas contra los grupos indígenas de Norpatagonia, en el contexto de la conformación y expansión del estado-nación argentino hacia fines del siglo XIX. Dado que consideramos las fotografías como índices que mantuvieron una relación directa con el referente representado, encontramos que las fotografías permiten entrever la violencia física y simbólica a la que fueron sometidos los indígenas.In this paper we analyze some of the photographs produced during the “Desert Conquest” (1879-1883) run to Northern Patagonia, Argentina; with the aim of tracking the representations of violence in these military campaigns directed against the indigenous groups of Northern Patagonia, in the context of the establishment and expansion of the Argentine nation-state in the late nineteenth century. Since we consider the photographs as indexes that maintained a direct relationship with the represented referent, we found that the pictures provide a glimpse of the physical and symbolic violence the indigenous people were put down to.
