Levinas’ and Sartre’s theories regarding the face and the gaze mark a turning point in the phenomenological approach to alterity. In this article, I conduct a comparative analysis of both doctrines to highlight their originality, similarities, and differences. This is carried out in two key stages. First, I examine the common starting point of both phenomenologists: the effort to account for the absolute and non-relative nature of the Other. Second, I discuss the role of generosity in their ethical projects, distinguishing Levinas’ deontological approach from Sartre’s axiological one.
