The leaf and stem anatomy of Mutisia acuminata var. paucijuga and M. hamata, two andean species from South America, is presented in order to analyze their anatomical features with adaptive potential to their environment. Plant material was collected in the province of Salta (Argentina) and processed using conventional techniques for light microscopy and scanning electron microscopy studies. Both species are similar in their leaf and cauline anatomical characteristics, such as, stem with complete ring, dorsiventral leaves with anomocytic stomata, and glandular trichomes. M. hamata is distinguished by its xeromorphic characters, leaves with strongly striated cuticles, epidermis with abundant trichomes and partially sunken stomata, and secretory canals in the stem cortex. The corresponding photomicrographs obtained with optical microscopy and scanning electron microscopy are presented.
