This paper analyses the strategies deployed by Alonso de Santa Cruz [1505-c. 1567] to sustain his authority as a cosmographer, exploring an anecdote included in his Islario general de todas las islas del mundo... (c. 1560): the encounter with some strange, aquatic monsters in Ascensión island, erroneously taken by himself and his comrades as Indians. As a limit case, Ascensión island sea monsters constitute a fruitful ground to observe the interplay between diverse strategies designed to support the anecdote´s trustworthiness and Santa Cruz cosmographical authority. First, I will analyse some general aspects concerning first-hand testimony appraisal in the period. Then, I will consider three issues more directly related to Santa Cruz: his definition of cosmography and its different levels of analysis; the description and categorisation of what he allegedly saw in Brazil; and finally, the value given to the information provided by those who lived there permanently, feitores and Native peoples. I aim to account for the heteroclite ensemble of traditions, practices and collaborations needed to construct knowledge about overseas territories during the first half of the sixteenth century. In this setting, even sea monsters found their place as trustworthy descriptors of the world.
